Andrew Ford - Myrtleford House (new house);
IBM (Marketing Manager), Social Star (Brand Director) and digital marketing mentor.

I work for IBM and I also run a social media consultancy business called Social Star. We engaged Simon for our house in Myrtleford which is on quite a difficult site and he came up with some great designs with architectural flare. Very quickly he fleshed out these designs in amazing 3D images. We are really impressed with Simon’s flexibility, his knowledge about architecture, the environment and fitting the building into those environments. I was recommended to Simon for all those reasons and if I ever require an architect again I will definitely call Duckbuild, particularly if I want something that has architectural dynamics and something that is going to be really interesting. So, yes I would recommend Simon.

Ashburton House (subdivision and new house) and Seddon House (subdivisions and new house); Sackville Wilks (property lawyer) and property developer.

I am a property lawyer and a part time property developer. I inspected one of Simon’s projects and was very impressed by the level of creativity and the finish of the project. I have since engaged Simon and Duckbuild in three projects. Duckbuild do cutting edge and exciting work which is the type of projects I am after. I have always found them to be very efficient and dependable. I think, for the services they provide, they are very reasonably priced. There is a good balance between functionality and style. Simon is pragmatic as well as creative. The feedback I get from my builders is that they are very impressed with the work, especially the level of detail and design produced by Duckbuild. So far I have been very happy with the work that Simon and Duckbuild have produced and I look forward to working with them in future projects.

Simon McNamara
Red Hill (new house); Inkuberra (Director) and food chain owner.

This is our 6th project that my wife and I have done, so we have had a bit of experience with different architects. What sets Simon and Duckbuild apart from the others is that they have a more pragmatic approach. Usually with other architects we have had to reel them back when it comes to cost, whereas with Simon he is the one that says well hold on have you considered the cost in this or that. So from a person who is cost conscious that has been a really positive thing. We also really like that Simon has been able to inject great design flair into a practical solution that is not crazily expensive. We have been really pleased that the design also respects what we were trying to achieve. It has been a pleasure to work with Simon and Duckbuild. They are just very easy to work with and nothing is too much trouble. It has been a great journey.

Dr Sue Wilks
South Melbourne House (alterations) and Barwon Heads House (alterations); The University of Melbourne, architectural academic.

I saw Simon as a student at The University of Melbourne and he stood out from the rest of the students because of his creative work. So as soon as we had an architectural job to do we engaged Simon and Duckbuild. The first was a small house project, there were lots of hours spent nutting out the best use of spaces and the end product was fantastic. So after that project, we had another house that needed a completely new look. It was a cottage that we wanted to make modern. We were concerned about how not to spend too much money and how to best achieve the effect we wanted. I have to say within a very short time, Simon had really nailed it. The product is absolutely fantastic, we love it and so does everyone else that has walked by. It has been a great experience working with Simon and Duckbuild.

Claire Reid
Hawthorn House 2 (alterations); English and Psychology Teacher

Simon did some terrific work for friends of ours. They recommended him to design a new living space at the back of our Victorian terrace. We wanted a room that was functional but also sympathetic to our 130 year old house. We were really pleased with how the new and old work in harmony together. Working with Duckbuild was a really positive experience – the people in that company are really fabulous, nice people that work hard and are easy to work with. Simon wanted to produce the best design he could even though we couldn't afford a high‐end solution. He went above and beyond and tweaked it until he was personally happy with it. Attention to detail matters to him. We were on a pretty tight budget, and every step of the way we went through the fee schedule so we knew exactly where we were spending our money and where we could save money, so we ended up with something we were all really happy with in the end.

Written Testimonials

Julia Morley
Hawthorn House (alterations); Origin Energy and Septic Systems Australia.

Right from the start, Duckbuild impressed us with its efficient, professional and flexible manner and of course, its innovative and fresh design ideas. The company was clear and upfront on the associated cost of the design and there were no hidden surprises relating to the fee structure. Duckbuild’s response to our brief not only inspired confidence, but captured the design we were looking for. We were looking for a design that balanced practicality and innovation, which incorporated some unique features that would set our house apart from the typical single-fronted Victorian renovation. Duckbuild successfully delivered on both these fronts and we were thrilled with the result.

Ben & Liz Austin
Balaclava House (alterations)

As a boutique, Melbourne based architectural company, Duckbuild provided us with the best possible solution for our house. Having lived in it for only a couple of months, Simon was honest about the possibilities as well as the limitations. Allowing us the flexibility to run with certain components of the renovation we felt most comfortable, the arrangement suited us perfectly. Offering a very quick, affordable and most personalised service, we have recommended Duckbuild to all of our friends and family and look forward to working with them again on our next big property investment.

Elliot Gill
Sold Richmond House I (real estate agent); Bennison Mackinnon (Partner)

In 2011 I sold a property for Simon Cookes that he designed in Richmond. The property saw masses of people come through over the campaign as the design was very out of the ordinary and ultimately I gave out as many of Simon’s business cards as I did brochures for the property because everyone who walked in the front door said “wow, I have never seen anything like this, who is the architect?” I have sold lots of interesting architectural homes over the years but Simon’s creation really showed me a new angle on what you could do with what was originally a basic Victorian cottage. The use of space was as good as I had seen in any house. Simon is not like other architects and if you do want a property that does not look like the others, then Duckbuild is the perfect solution.

Apical Office Fit‐Out; Managing Director (Apical International Pty Ltd)

Unaccustomed to testimonials (as I am) I checked the definition of "professionals" on Wikipedia. Simon and his team ticked the boxes for all of the seven "main criteria for professionals". I particularly love the colour he has left me with.
